Hey Guys,
Paving season is almost upon us and my parents want a new patio. There is a huge concrete slab in place at the minute and I know is about 500mm deep as I had to break part of it out towards the end of last year to move a drain (Nightmare).

My question is, can I lay 400x400mm slabs directly on top of this concrete? The area is pretty square and I plan on cutting a channel down the centre of it and installing a channel drain then making the slabs fall towards this channel to help with drainage.

If it is possible, is it best to use cement to lay each slab individually and then use a self-setting jointing compound for the joints or do I lay them on a bed of sharp sand like I would with brick pavers?

500mm that is 1/2 of a metre, over 18" thick - Did you really mean the concrete was that thick?

Yep lol, the house is an old council house that my parents bought years ago but before that the house was renovated by the council. I remember the back garden being a huge hole and they filled it all in with concrete, that's why I really dont want to have to dig it all out lol. I also know there is an old concrete sewage drain running the length of the house so I dont want to disturb that either.
