Paying half up front

When I had the roof done I paid after completion, which included about £3k materials and scaffolding. But when I had the kitchens and bathroom done I paid upfront for all goods, about a month prior to delivery. Fitting was after completion. The boiler and central heating system was 10% deposit, windows and doors 25%, garage door after fitting. So I suppose it varies.

It depends how big is the job and how established the builder is.
Most busy builders have accounts with suppliers and will accept a deposit at delivery of the first lot of material.
I used to take a very small deposit of £200/300 to book the job because some customers cancel on the start day when material is delivered (happened to me twice).
Then I wouldn't let the lorry unload unless deposit was paid; had a clown cancel the job after the lorry had gone and we had to load everything in the van and do 3 trips to return everything. I left the sand and aggregate on his front drive and charged him to remove it a week later.
