Paying Roofer?

Hi, having a garage roof replaced. The roofer has asked for the cost of the materials to be paid afterday 1, its a 2 day job


My family are screaming NO, no payment until job is complete.

What do you think?

I wouldn't, unless I knew him well. If it's only a 2 day job, how is it going to make a difference to him if he's paid one day later? Stage payments are fair enough for a lengthy job, but this sounds a bit odd for 2 days of work.

It beggars belief why a roofer who is supposedly working on a day to day basis has not got a float of cash in the bank to pay for materials or even a 30 day account with his supplier.

If he can't afford the materials can he afford to come back to the job in the event of a problem?

Maybe the roofer has been stung by a cowboy customer?
Ask him for the suppliers name and offer to pay for the materials directly.

He sounds like an idiot, even if he's been stung before (who hasn't?) find another roofer.
