What is the current thinking on mounting/seating the bathroom basin onto its pedestal?

Is it mortar, silicone, plumbers mate, a special rubber gasket, or just dry?

Thanks

Hmmm...personal preference it think. I do it dry and then use a thin seal of silicone to prevent movement. BUT i have seen some cheap ones with huge gaps that yyou can't seem to get seated right.......then it's a case of whatever works!

I dont mount using silicone unless its a poor fit due to poor quality pottery.
And then ,if its not moving in situ there is no need.
The times i have used silicone it has been to tidy it up if its visible ,say when the customer walks up the stairs and can see the basin from below, but thats bcause i have thought it necessary and not down to customer asking.

Thank you, chaps, for that information.

It was just that a hard china-to-china support seemed worrying. We always used putty, back in the 60s, just to soften the contact.
