Not sure that they do. I've been on the receiving end of an allegation byt a pupil which I know was a pack of lies and which other witnesses and indeed video evidence demonstrates quite clearly to be nonsense. The lad in question had managed to convince himself of an alternative reality and for him he was telling the truth, in spite of all the evidence to the contrary (including his girlfriend admitting watching him punch himself in the chest on the way home afterwards to bruise himself which he claimed I did to him)

Sometimes these people warp reality since it is easier to come to terms with a lie than the cold hard light of day.

Interesting comment Canta Ooha, although I think you could have phrased the last sentence better, e.g.
It is easier to come to terms with than a lie in the cold light of day.

The little psychology that I did suggested that we, humans, could not accept that we are intently lying and we sometimes justify our criminal behaviour to lessen the conscience that we all have, e.g. thieves convincing themselves that they are doing an important role in the community, if there were no thieves, there would be no jobs for the police. Or murderers, rapists, etc justifying their crime by " they deserved it", etc.
