Perm on ceiling light, power switches not working

Yep lesson learnt. In hindsight I wish I had of just stuck a camera in the gap and taken a pic before I took the light down.

The single strand black wire was put in the terminal opposite the blue wire and it tripped the RCD.

You are all correct!

I moved the red and brown to the spare terminal and the single thread to the opposite the live terminal.

Now it works.

And photo anything before you take it apart.

OK.

Remove that bit of flex.

Leave the two reds connected together in that bit of terminal block WITH NOTHING ELSE CONNECTED TO THEM.
The black that has a bit of tape on it, goes to the L connector on the light fitting
The black that is currently on the terminal block goes to the N of the light fitting.
Does that work ?

If so your next job is to find the earth wires and connect them to the earth terminal on the light. They are probably stuffed up in the ceiling.
THAT LIGHT FITTING MUST BE EARTHED
