peugeot 307 gearbox

A work mate is having trouble selecting 3rd gear on his 307, its a hdi model around 2003. Im not sure what mileage its done.
It doesnt have any clutch slip issues and all other gears are ok
I know some of these suffer with dmf problems but cant see it being anything to do with that if its only one gear, im aware the gearboxes are crap on peugeots but does anyone have any further info on these?

Does it crunch on engagement or will it just not go in? Presumably these are a new type of gearbox then, the Peugeot/Citroen gearboxes on my XMs seem to last forever, 300,000 miles at least
