A few photos from the last couple of weeks...(need to clean the iPhones lens I think!)

A DIY'er fitting a Sfix purchased CU to his garage, he only terminated a couple of circuits, and then called us as the sockets were tripping randomly though the day. Spot two issues.

Thought perhaps it would just be moisture ingress in the pointless JB, but no.....

You can't really see here, but the neutral has been nipped by the screw.

While on a job, asked to have a look at a heater to see if I could get a spare knob. This panel heater is on a wall with a bed RIGHT up against it! How it only ended with an overheated knob and not a fire I will never know!

They've transposed the two circuits.

Must be a high-integrity board that's not been used as such?

Is that split-con?
 
What are all those neutrals doing stuffed into the main switch?
 
As for the Osram sticker, obviously a man after my own heart.... :wink:

As has been suggested, it appears to be a split-con feed to the CU.

Have I misunderstood the picture - does the Line from the main switch go into left hand side of the RCCD but the neutral appear from the load side?
 
It doesn't look like the neutrals go to the load side of the RCD's, but it wouldn't work atall if they didn't would it?

There's 1.5mm cable on 32A MCB, 2.5mm RFC on 6A MCB

I certainly wouldn't call it 'normal' (common) - I have personally never used split-con. However, there isn't necessarily anything 'wrong' about it.

I think you probably have misunderstood. As I see it, the L from the main switch probably goes to the RHS (top) of the first RCD (the L busbar coming out of the RHS bottom of it), whilst both in/out of the neutrals are on the LHS of that RCD.

Did they even bother to look at the installation manual that came with it, or even just google MK consumer unit wiring and find plenty of examples?
 
They had transposed the lighting and the ring final - Ring on a B6 and the lighting (1.5mm) on the B32.

It is fed in 16mm split concentric from the house, on a B50 MCB. Nothing wrong there at all. Neutrals are in order (not in shot).

Split con is used LOADS down here for submains - treated like T+E. YOU CANNOT USE STRAIGHT CONCETRIC and comply to BS7671.

Unfortunately split concentric doesn't comply for a cable buried in the ground under the 17th edn regs.

Nor for burying in the wall without RCD protection.

As I always say - TREAT it just like T+E and your fine. It is far superier to T+E, easier to pull in and cleat, and the earth is table 54.7 compliant, unlike T+E.

Ideal for running submains where the cables are run in service voids/risers and under the floors/in lofts. Not so ideal if you want to put it in a wall less than 2" deep.
