We got rid of the bricked up fireplace in our new home and found this behind....we are clueless and have no idea what we can do with it. I'm not sure if I need to look for a gas fireplace or an open fireplace. There is a flue liner going into some sort of concrete chamber which is about 5' from the floor.

There is a plug socket on the back wall and a gas pipe nearby but if this can be used as an open fireplace that would be preferable.

Any ideas welcome :)

Many thanks!!

I don't recognise it, but perhaps there used to be a range there. Stand back to show the whole wall, and include something to show scale.

Thanks John.

Here's an old picture from when we were knocking the fireplace out, hopefully this helps:

can't see it on imageshack.

What are the dimensions?

so is it eight feet high and three feet wide?

in the pic it looks as if the arched enclosure has been erected after the house was built, around something. It reminds me of an old wall-hung Ascot water heater, but you would see signs of pipes. The breeze-block platform certainly looks fairly new. It doesn't look to me like a fireplace.

Have a look upstairs and in the loft. Is there a chimney or flue?

I don't see any soot.
