Can anybody advise whether to use Screws or nails and if so, any particular type?

The fence is 3' high picket with wood gravel boards.

personal choice is stainless steel screws, galvanised nails are a bit cheaper and fine, if you can find galvanised annular or ring shank nails then they will grip better than normal nails.

if hammering nails, a lump hammer on the back of the rail absorbs most of the unwanted shocks from nailing in on the other side
