A little over exposed, Adam! 
As far as I can make out, it's either an elephant, or a metal switch plate with no earth screwed directly onto the wall with no backbox? Probably done by an NTL installer, if you've ever looked at one of their flush outlet plates...

Are they 3.5mm extension pillars, no nails'ed into a wall
Nowt as fancy as that... Brass wood screws into the timber to hold the switch... you're just seeing the holes
