piece of glass with holes in it?

can you get glass cut to size and the edges polished, with holes cut in it?
maybe 6 holes round the perimeter of a long rectangle..
they would only need to be small holes, maybe 6mm or 8mm diameter..

would it need to be any special kind of glass if it's for in front of a light?

Yes you can. Depends what kind of light, the heat from a normal 100w bulb will be fine but one of those 500watt halogen babies and the glass will have to be tempered.
