How do you put a stop-valve on a pipe (to turn the water supply on/off), when the pipe is running with water.

(Can't turn the water off at the mains because the main stop tap to the house is damaged) Do I have to call the water company in????????

Call a plumber who will freeze the supply for you and fit a stoptap.

Expect to pay in my area £75

ok.. i will consider the freezing option.

BUT.... what about the main water stop-tap to the house... Hoe can that be fixed. Surely that's the job for the water company, because they would have to close the supply to my property??

No, it can be carried out by either the water co or an independent. Expect to be charged either way.

You can't freeze running water  Have you not got access to the main stop cock out side somewhere, eg your water meter?

Have you got an outside stop tap (in the pavement) anywhere?

Put mole grips on pipe after faulty stop cock, crush pipe and bend it over, freeze pipe before stop cock, replace stop cock, turn off, replace bent pipe, job done.

What material is the pipe?

If it is MDPE or Alkethene (plastics) then it can probably be squeezed.

If it can't be squeezed then you can always try "snatching" a tap on outside (fitting live). Requires a bit of determination and a good pair of wellies but it is quite simple.
