PIR PC

Hello does anyone know if it's possible to wire a standard (outside security light) PIR to a PC so that not only does it activate the light it also connects 2 wires going into the PC (e.g. a dismantled mouse) and therefore brings it out of hibernation.

I know the details regarding the PC side of it it's the PIR's I have no experience with basically is there a low voltage output from the PIR that can send a signal over for example over cat5 or bell wire or even 1mm tc+e

Wrong kind of motion detection I think. The unit you linked to is for sensing movement of the unit, i.e. vibration. Not heat movement like a PIR.

You want a PIR from a security alarm, they run on 12v and have a set of volt free contacts, although they are normally closed. If you want normally open then you would be better looking at something designed for use with security lighting controllers or CCTV systems.

If you particularly want a working light with your PIR motion detector, then you could get a light-with-built-in-CCTV. It has a 12v output designed to operate a recording system as well as sending data.

If it's for cctv then the time it takes for the pc to start whatever set the pir off might have gone,I tried something similar many years ago with a video recorder.
I have an old pc with a two dvr cards and and five cameras around the house and you can set up zones on the picture,When it's triggered ie: pir lamp it records as a alarm file and it records 24/7.

Mr UK that would be very convenient because I've got those PIRs in almost every room

Spike good idea but thing is already have a webcam and pir in position was hoping would be just a case of running some cat5 or something similar between PIR and PC but seems to be more complex than that

Cat I take your point about slow start up but I can usually get decent time by using certain settings like hibernate file on an almost empty disk and minimal programs running etc or failing that just standby

Cat can you elaborate on your system like which PIR lamp you are referring to and such. It sounds like what I'm looking for very interesting thank you

why not buy another camera (you said yoiu have a webcam) and a DVR?

not all cost £££££££ it will do what you want, or can be left on 24/7 or set so it only records if the camera sees something. (also you can get cameras with infra red leds)

if thats of no use and you do want an alarm pir, as mentioned most are normally closed, but there is nothing that says you can not connect a relay to the contacts and then use the relays normally open contatcs.

but a dvr is less grief, deos what you want and leaves your pc to do what pc do best (crash)

Ta for the reply Mr Breezer yes I suppose but my PC hasn't crashed for years now and it's like convenient and kinda nice having instant access to your cameras while you're surfing the web etc but I'll have to do sum research on those relays you mentioned thank you

oh, and although you mention anexternal floodlight / pir you have not said if you want it for indoor our outdoor use.

I will assume outdoor, in which case you can not use an ordainairy pir because they are meant for internal use, and if used outside will soon corrode.

you can get 12v external lighting pirs called GJD, again these will need a relay. also you should be aware you can not alter the sensativity of a pir, you can alter what it can seem but not its sensativity.

a DVR with motion detect you can adjust how sensative the camera is before the DVR will start to record.

I guess i am trying to say the right kit for the right job is always best

Which cables do you think I should lay from the location of any possible DVR or PC to the possible location of any of the PIR's you mention (external)?

The camera's already hooked up via USB

6 core the highest I've ever used is 3 core u mean 6 core 1mm? I never knew that existed
