A couple of years ago we were having a bit of a conversation about planing with some apprentices and spoke about the various parts of a plane. There were about 10 of us all time served and with many years experience behind us , but when the question "what is the piece that screws to the blade called?" there were 10 blank faces and a good deal of erming and ering 
. We finally settled on backing iron but even some of the lads who had decades of experience weren't sure but thought this was as good as we were going to get.
