Plastic pipe to garden tap

The outside (metal) pipe cracked in the frost. I've cut it off and cut a similar length of plastic pipe (I was told less likely to crack), connected to the original pipe with pushfit.
However, although I was told compression joins would work with plastic, when I connected to the tap with a compression, the pipe just pulls loose. I've used an insert, olive, and tightened with half turn by spanner.
Am I wrong to be using plastic into the tap? Will I have to use 6" metal pipe, then plastic, then back to metal?

Plastic is ok if it does the job and doesn't leak. Insulation is a good idea to protect against frost.

How snuggly does the olive fit on the pipe before tightening? Have tou tried tightening it by more than a half turn?

I am not a big fan of speedfit pipe being taught by a old time plumber but I do belive that you can get a speedfit garden tap. Failing that I know they do a backplate elbow and get a tap to suit.
