Please could you help with wiring new light to older cables

Hi,

I'm trying to connect a new light fitting but it looks like the existing has been there for about 30years and the wiring as well !

THe old light fitting had three cables split into 4 strands going into a 4way chocolotae box as follows :-

With the old light having live and neutral coming out the other side

However my new fitting only has 3 available connections on the attach chocolate box.....can anyone fathom out what goes where ?

Your advice is greatly appreciated

You need an additional piece of chocolate block for the permanent lives (the 3 which go together.)
The red on its own goes to L
The blacks go to N
The earths go to the earth terminal.

Then he would have 2 reds in extra choc block, single red to L, 2 blacks to N and 3 earths to earth terminal.

There are 4 reds there

There has been confusion due to misleading photograph etc, and above statement talks about a red 'on its own', which technically there isn't,
so to echo Spark 123:-

One of the reds on the cable with two reds go to L
All three remaining reds go together on their own in a additional piece of connector block.
The blacks go to N
The earths go to the earth terminal.

Guys,

Thank you all for the advice here

One final thing - i'm struggling to get all 3 earths into the hole of the choc box as it's a very tight fight, it would be easier just to have 2 connected with the the third twisted around the 2 strands but not actually inside the choc box, is this acceptable or bad practice and dangerous ?

You are quite right but at least this one has a 'before' picture and all the information you could ever need - makes a change.

Dont know about others, but if theres only two or three cores going into a choc block, I like to push them all the way in, so that both screws trap all 2/3 conductors. Oversized blocks come in handy for this. I just dont trust the tiny screws to secure the cores on their own.

I usually try and do the same if there's space, but I've never had one lose its grip on me yet. I do tend to use 15A ones if the original displeases me, though.
