Hi,

I've a two year old hedge trimmer that works fine when the blade is horizontal, as soon as i lift it upward to the vertical position it dies. I've taken the lid off but see no obviously loose connections etc.

Any ideas what could be causing this and what i need to check ?

I can post a pic of the internals if that would help anybody ?

Thanks in advance,
Mike.

If this is a mains powered trimmer --

Have you checked the cable where it enters the machine. It's a common place for a core to break. Get somebody to move the cable around while you operate the trimmer and see if it goes off.

I wouldn't even do this to be honest - disconnect it from the mains and take it apart to see whether the cable is intact. If you can't see any obvious damage, bin it and buy another as its possibly not worth wasting time on, particularly when they're so cheap these days.

why not get a water filled metal bucket and stand in it with no clothes on while you are at it!

Jokes.

Get a new one. it will probably perform better any way.

On the other hand, check the connections at the plug end, but probably moulded.

I agree, 40 quid gets you a new B&D one!

As above, it's almost certainly the cable.

Solution - remove cable from the machine, cut 50cm or so off the end (which is probably where the fault is), and reconnect cable.

If it still doesn't work, then buy a new one.

It may be the brushes, hedge trimmer are started and stopped a lot which wears them quickly. If its the case the commutator is probably badly worn too.

Replace it, that way you get sharp new teeth too.

Edit: Check the guarantee it may be 3 years.
