I have made a big mistake..My thermostat in my immersion heater has failed, so i took it off and have been to get a new one, my problem is i've forgotten which wire goes where when it comes to wiring in the new thermostat, now i'm no plumber or electrician and i know i'm an idiot for not making notes or taking pics before i disconnected the old one but whats done is done.
Can someone please tell me which wire goes to where if i explain on here...
I have 1 cable from my isolation switch which has 3 wires, 1 black, 1 red, 1 green.
The heater part attached to the cylinder, where the thermostat goes in has 3 posts, the post at the front right has a brown wire attached to it and there is 1 green wire that is attached to Earth it.
please tell me where i attach the respective wires, please keep explanations simple as i am a simple person. I will be very graetful to anyone who helps me here...Thasnks in advance.

Sorry just 1 quick ammendment.....The 3 posts on the immersion heater where the thermostat goes into...The brown wire is attached to the post on the left and not on the right as i put earlier....Thanks

er.... have you just moved Nottinghamshire outside of the UK?

mi5neo, can you post us a picture of the immersion heater? It will be much easier to explain which wire goes where for you.

Do you have a rectangular junction box (wiring centre)(possibly in the airing cupboard) with a whole load of wires that the cylinder stat connects into?

A picture of your Zone Valve would be helpfull in identifying the wiring system of your central heating system, as would a picture of the inside of the wiring centre would also help.

You would have more than one of these in a typical S Plan.

Or one of these in a typical Y plan.

I think they are talking about the immersion element, and nothing to do with the cent heat part of the equation.

Earth to the body of the heater.

Blue to the 'post' with a terminal on.

The 'post' with the brown 'welded' to it goes into one of the thermostat terminals. The brown from the flex from the wall goes to the other thermostat terminal.

A photo would help to clarify.

There's not much call for zone valves on an immersion heater.

Usually immersion heaters have the live (brown or red) connected to one terminal of the thermostat, a short insulated wire link between the other terminal of the thermostat and one of the heater element connections (insulated posts), and the neutral (blue or black) connected to the other insulated post. The earth is usually clamped under a screw fitted straight into the brass of the immersion heater body.

If you are talking about the cylinder thermostat, then that is a different kettle of fish.
