i am wanting to take a spur from an existing wall socket as its the only one in the room. ive taken off the face and found 2 plug wires both with l, n and earth. one of the lives has red tape round it. how do i proceed.

First you need to accertain what type of circuit you have, is it a radial circuit or a ring final circuit, if the former then things are straight forward, if ti is the latter then you are going to need to do some testing to verify that the socket you have there is infact part of the ring final circuit and not a spur feeding a spur.
