Pockets for steels?

Hello everyone,

I am doing a full kitchen refurb and trying to see how to deal with this steel. I am actually not sure if it is a concrete lintel or steel, but it is supporting just one floor above and is approximately 3.10m long.

Can this steel in theory be supported solely by what I suppose is just 9 inch solid brick wall? Or will it always require these extra blocks protruding? On the other side it appears to be supported without any extra blocks.

You need to do a bit of investigative exposure and find out what the beam is and what is supporting it. We'll await an update .....
