Pointing mortar

what mortar mix to use for areas of pointing coming off stonework, also what is the dark grey compound used to lay the bricks feels crumbly if rubbed? 1930s terrace.

You will need to use a lime based mix. we pointed similar stone on our terraced house in a lime mix last year with charcoal specs in it. Please don't use a cement mix or your stone will soon be ruined!
 
bottom picture is like the mix we made. but we also added charcoal type grains to it to match the rest of the porigins pointing
 
What mix should I use? 1lime to 3 sand. and the little grit stones would that be grit sand or sharp sand?.
