Polyfilla swells when painted over ?!

Before I painted the wall I removed some things that were screwed into it plus removing a load of decorative tiles. This left quite a few scars which I fixed using Polyfilla Fine Surface. I sanded this down proper so that everything was perfectly smooth. As far as I can remember the highly thinned mist coat went on nicely. But when I painted proper coats of Dulux Diamond Finish Matt my problem started.

Basically the patches of filler seemed to swell when the paint was applied, making visible bumps underneath the paint. This improved when the paint dried, then swelled again on the second application of paint. Now that the job is finished after three layers of Dulux Diamond I can easily spot the subtle swells where the filler was used.

Nothing I can do about that now, but definitely not keen to see this happen again on my next job. My next task is a fairly busted up wall which again will need lots of filler then painting with the same paint. Any info and help would be greatly appreciated.

i don't think it swells, did you use a cork sanding block?

You need to use something that is very flat and has no give (unlike a sander) or you will get the effect you are describing. Wrap some sandpaper around a block of wood and try again.
