Motorhead's chart success might have caused Hawkwind to regret kicking Lemmy out, and so Hawkwind put out their own version of the song 'Motorhead' in 1981 in a rival bid for the charts. It got nowhere but was actually a brilliant record, I prefer it to Motorhead's own version. Fabulous interplay between the hacking electric guitar and the zappy synthesiser...

Covers the whole story from coming up with the Telstar tune, how the royalties were frozen because some French? bloke claimed he wrote it, his love affair with Heinz , the studio above a shop and the landlady chasing him for rent until he killed her and then blew his own head off.
Among the session musicians playing above the shop were Hodges, Blackmore and Mitch Mitchell.

I finally watched this film and yes, it is brilliant. After I'd watched it I watched it again! Cameo appearances from Chas Hodges, Mike Sarne, Jess Conrad and others; and Justin Hawkins was great as Screaming Lord Sutch. The soundtrack was a mix of original Meek recordings and some specially made for the film. I cringed at the graphic homosexual scenes though - these should have been left out or just alluded to. I know that we live in enlightened times but scenes like that stop such a good film from being family viewing.

What a shame that the money from 'Telstar', when eventually unfrozen, seeped away on legal fees and debts. It's an interesting fact that the money from the single's b-side was never frozen and provided a good income for Geoff Goddard.


I recommend Chas Hodges's book 'Chas Before Dave' for more about Meek's nutty genius.

'Please Don't Touch' a cover of the Johnny Kidd and The Pirates' song was a collaboration between Motorhead and Girlschool. Stunning lead guitar duels. This was Motorhead's biggest chart hit. They were on a roll but it was soon to come to an end....
