Hi, I have a Potterton Statesman oil fired boiler which I have had three different engineers look at but can’t find a solution/ reason for the problem which is :

When firing up each time , the flame comes on then off then on again for up to twenty times before staying on until it goes off when temp reached and then it goes through it all again !

The only way they can get it not to do this, is to remove the air inlet hose at the bottom. All been serviced etc (most things replaced !) any ideas would be much appreciated!

You may have a fault on the inlet air try running it without the hose and if you have no trouble then you know where the fault is but block up the hose with a non flammable rag to stop any gasses coming through.Bob

Thanks for getting back. Yes, everything runs ok with the hose/ pipe disconnected at the burner air inlet at the burner box. All the engineers I have had know this but don’t seem to know what to do rectify the issue. The boiler is in an outside brick ‘shed’ - is it safe with the pipe being disconnected at this one end? What do I tell the engineers needs doing ? I have spent so much money to get nowhere ! Looking forward to your response!

There is a leak from the flue to the air tube. The flue elbow is secured by 4 nuts. Try tightening these nuts, there may be enough gasket left to make a seal. As it is in an outbuilding, I would be inclined to leave the hose off but make sure you have enough ventilation to provide combustion air.

I’ll have a look - I’ve got the manual so should be ok. Once tightened, is it worth putting the air duct tube back on ? Also, if it still doesn’t solve the problem is it all safe left off ?

If balanced flue it will probably be the seals in the flue that have failed. Commonly caused by a sooted boiler.

As previous advice...ensure adequate ventilation and leave snorkel off.

I will have a look tomorrow - is it worth getting a new gasket and fitting myself ?
