The boiler keeps locking out and I can restart after a few times of switching off and on again, Any ideas what might be the problem

could be any number of things make sure pressure is up in system if sealed system model :?

then any one of gas valve, electrodes or pcb  none of which you should be messing with unless you are corgi registered

Dont suppose you still see this thread gaz (potterton man), but I have a powermax 155 failing to light and going to lockout.

Looked at the manual and it suggests an ignition burner pressure of 4mb, but I'm only getting 2Mb at the outlet nipple. The manual suggests faulty gas valve - do you reckon this is feasible ?

The electrode lead looks a little damaged also but theres no stray sparks happening.

The valves for these seem rather expensive, I'd rather not go down the part swapping before I confirm the diagnosis, so any help would be appreciated.

These are often difficult boilers even for the professionals.

For safety reasons I am not going to give any technical advice to anyone who has not disclosed his CORGI number. Somone was killed when a service engineer made a mistake recently on a similar model.

The best option for most owners is to call Potterton/Baxi or British Gas for a fixed price repair.

Its not really fair but the independents cannot even buy the gas valve for the fixed repair price!

Hi Tony, My corgi No is 221562 - Garforth Gas Services if you want to check it out.

Dont do too many repairs especially on boilers like these so any help appreciated.

Thats fine Steve (?).

Its a new number so I will have to be cautious!

Have you checked electrically that the APS is being powered?

If it really is then have you measured the voltage on each of the gas valve solenoids?

IF there is voltage on the gas valve solenoid then have you checked the resistance of each solenoid? I am not sure what they should be but probable about 2k to 4k.

As I said before the fixed price repair could be less than the cost of the gas valve !!!

Tony

PS

If you are in Leeds then why dont you know my old friend Harry Crossley?

Thanks for the reply Tony (yes its Steve !)

Only started trading on my own recently having worked for a company, mainly did (and now do) installs as theres too much to keep up with. Havent had too much chance to look into the boiler as it was a late night and the missus was blowing my ears off down the phone !

Looking at the history of these boilers I think your advice re Brit Gas fixed price is the way to go !

Anything to save me getting more earache is a good thing as this customer will only let me in on a night.

b.t.w. who's Harry ?

Many honest people will go and do the basic checks I have outlined and if that indicates a failed gas valve then they recommend to the client a fixed price repair and dont make any charges ( although many clients would give them a hansome tip for being so honest! )

Not Harry the Honk :?:

Checked for correct voltage at terminal G1 as per manual, and also the activation of the APS, sparking at electrode, inlet gas pressure, ignition burner pressure etc as per basic checks. Got to be honest and say I didnt check the voltage/resistance at the solenoids !

Wont be charging customer as I am too honest, and will be passing on to Brit Gas to make sure best value for her as she had been quoted £138 +vat for the valve alone.

Steve.

P.S. still dont know who Harry (the honk) is !

Those are the key tests you should have done!

Harry is tall and slim with ( now ) whitish grey hair and used to be seen regularly in the Moorside Edge area until it was destaffed some years ago!

I have seen him posting on the Screwfix plumbing site but not for the last few months!

I last actually met him at the York Radio show about 2002 at the racecourse when he admitted his new plumbing career! I remember he bought some of our large adjustables!

Check your overheat stat and water level switch, both prevent power being sent on to the gas valve. On a zero governor by the way.
