If a PRD operates, due scaling or wrong head/hose or similar,
must it always be replaced?

I put a "special" head on a cheap B&Q shower (triton I think) and it caused the PRD to operate.

had a look at the PRD in situ and it just seemed to be a nylon ball in a spout. I shoved the ball back down with a screwdriver, replaced the original head, and it seemed to be OK therafter.

so are some PRDs resettable?

I think you have answered your own question & resolved the problem you caused yourself. :(

When I used to own an electric shower, you always had to replace the prd as it was a 'use once' type plastic device, so once blown would always drip.

You should only ever use the shower head as supplied by the manufacturer as a general rule ;)
