Hi I'm wondering if anyone can help?

I'm doing a loft conversion and as part of floor strengthening, I am installing some large beams between the party wall and the internal masonry walls. I would like some advice on how to set the pre cast lintel (which is generally acting as a padstone to support the ends of the beams) on top of the existing masonry walls/ party walls, the reason I'm asking is that the pad stone specified is only 145mm deep, the wall that will be supporting the lintel/ padstone terminates 15mm or so beneath the underside of the first floor joists, the floor joists are 150mm deep and thus if I set the lintel/ padstone on the wall, the top of the lintel/ padstone will be lower than the top of the joists. In addition to this, the beam that the lintel/ padstone will support must clear the floor joists by 15mm to allow for beam deflection. Any ideas?

Thanks alot for your help.

Oliver.

thats sounds like a shallow padstone to put steel beams on.have these been designed by an engineer????

or use a concrete block bedded on the wall or use engineering bricks.the most common size for a padstone is block size,450mm x 225mm.
but these and the beams would normally be worked out by an engineer because your local building control will want paperwork supporting the results

It depends on the amount of load that needs to be spread onto the wall. If the load is small then it might be ok but 145 doesnt course? The most common size like is said above is 225 deep 3 brick courses or one block.

ive just done a loft conversion and to save breaking into the downstairs rooms the engineer had me use a 380mm x 25mm plate welded perpendicular to the beams.

im assuming its a gang nailed trussed roof and therefore the roof will need supporting off the new beams along with the weight of flooring materials and furniture/stored materials.
