We have had a small section of wall newly plastered, and I want to paint it to match the rest of the room, but I do not want to rush it and end up with peeling paint in a few months.

How long do you usually wait before priming new plaster, and how do you tell it is actually dry, rather than just dry on the surface? I have heard different advice on mist coats, from a very watered-down emulsion coat to a dedicated primer, and I am not sure which gives a better result for a normal matt emulsion top coat.

Is one mist coat usually enough, or do you do two thinner coats before the top coats? Any tips for spotting patches that have not taken the paint evenly would be welcome, as the wall is in a room that gets a lot of daylight.

Depends on paint.
Whatever paint you are using, read the application data sheet online PDF.
Will tell you everything you want to know.

If I use a durable emulsion I like to use gardz to seal and I think it's easier and a better job.
The paint manufacturers often (not always) say to use the durable emulsion with 10% water added as a mistcoat.

There are loads of different primers you can use or not use if you are following the data sheet.
There is plenty of ways you can do it hence the confusion.
Start by reading data sheet for the paint and decide.
