Problems with Hive - radiators not heating

Hi Guys,

I had an electrician fit a Hive mini to my boiler but my central heating is no longer working - hot water is fine. The thermostat is linking and the app etc all appears to be working on but when u boost the heating or increase the temp so it should kick in we get nothing. The boiler fires up and certainly sounds like it’s working but not heat is getting to the rads. One quirk is I had 2 zone heating before- upstairs and downstairs- if they could be an issue? None of them are working

Can we have some pictures of how the Hive receiver has been wired up?
Was it wired into the wiring centre, where the zone valves are connected, or has it been connected directly to the boiler?

But really, if you have been left with an inoperative heating system, you really should be calling the electrician back to repair it!

It’s an ideal logic, combi 35.
As far as I can see that’s where he has wired in the new receiver thermostat. The extra white wire was for earthing because he had no 5 core, wired directly into the boiler,as far as I know the other wired thermostats were isolated and cut off

Can we please see the wiring behind the Hive receiver?
And how are your zone valves connected?
Were the old 'stats removed when the Hive was installed?

I'm afraid you really shouldn't have the cover removed from that boiler. The cover forms part of the room sealing for the system and should really be checked for safety by an RGI after it has been replaced - (probably something your electrician shouldn't have done either! )

Not being condescending, and sorry you feel that way. I'm replying in a way that I can within the site rules.

DIY GAS

IS DIY GAS LEGAL? Diy gas work is not illegal, BUT, the law does require that only competent people may work on gas appliances. You also have to be able to test anything you've done, so you need the right equipment and have the right qualification to use it. The Gas Safety Regs 1998 states...

I am obliged to point out that removing the cover of that boiler interferes with the room sealing of the unit and needs checking by a professional afterwards.

Apologies, not fully appraised with all the rules. The two wired thermostats have been cut off so don’t believe they have and connection to the boiler now, I am not sure on how the zone valves are connected to the boiler

Thanks, so it looks as if the Hive has been directly connected to the boiler, and the white cable going into the wall (beside the boiler), probably connects to a fused connection unit, to power the boiler.

...so that leaves the zone valves and what the electrician has done with them.
Do you know where they are, is there a small box (wiring centre), that they are connected into?

And a question I should have asked earlier - did the electrician actually test the system to check that it worked before they left?

Found them there… electrician wasnt Near them at all! The wiring in there looks complicated but there is a manual old school switch to ‘manual’ on the valves. If I flick them will that leave them open all the time and run off the hive?

Sorry, I will be condescending now to your electrician!

It took me a while to realise how they have wired up the Hive.
They have used a grey triple and earth cable - oversleeving the copper earth conductor in blue for the Neutral - this is explicitly not allowable by the wiring regs!
And then they have run a separate flex, purely for the earth.
This could all have been achieved within the regs with the triple and earth.

Along with disconnecting the zone valves, I wouldn't be calling this electrician back!

Yes, flip them to manual, and see what happens!

That should allow the radiators to heat up - but it's only a temporary fix.

The 'electrician' who installed the Hive is incompetent, suggest you get a refund from them and pay someone who actually knows what they are doing.
Nothing needed to be changed at the boiler, all connections should have been made in the wiring centre.
