recently my neighbour moved her gas bbq and positioned it up against our fence right behind our arbour where all the family sit out i have two young children and i am worried about the safety aspect of this i am not sure about gas safety regulations is this legal

Can't see what would be illegal.

I wouldn't worry too much though as these cylinders also fit inside gas fires for the home and caravans etc. which are close to people. I'd say the chances of one exploding are remote.

The cylinder might not explode, unless the bbq set light to the fence and the arbour, AND it wouldn't be the first one to do it. I'd ask if they have adequate insurance to have it there, the hint might work. Fire regulations generally require a 30 minute fire break which is 30'' of space between the fire source and the boundary.

If it's any consolation I've heard of situations where these bottles have been inside buildings etc that have caught fire and none exploded?
I've also seen a demonstration where a cigarette was lit and then held in front of a bottle and the tap turned on, nothing happened?
Don't ask me why cos I aint gotta clue, I was too busy deciding where to bury my a** to listen to the blokes explanation.

Personally I really wouldn't worry about this. I have seen firemen carry very hot calor bottles out of a burning barn. Why would they explode just sitting in a garden? The bottles are very strong an incorporate overpressure release valves that vent the gas in the event of high temperatures and the resulting pressure.
