Hi,

Just replaced fridge and discovered gas pipe behind it.
While looking for new fridge I was made aware of issues with fridges going on fire.
The fact that the fridge is the only item that is on 24/7, has caused me real worry.
What would be the best way to protect pipes from fire.

Any advice would be much appreciated

possibly a one in perhaps 20 million chance your fridge will catch fire this year or perhaps a one in a million over its life time
move the fridge away from the gas pipe to a different location or get on with your life as your more likely to have another accident whilst driving because your worried about the fridge catching fire and not paying attention

Is it iron or copper? Only a copper pipe with soldered fittings could be damaged that way. Anyway as said chances are very remote and if your fridge catches fire the rest of the kitchen will most likely be ablaze long before the solder melts.

It is a copper pipe. Can’t move to a different location. Bought metal backed fridge which is supposed to be safer.

Make sure you also get an Earth rod connected to that copper gas pipe - in case it gets struck by lightning!
