Protecting new roof beams

What is the best (and easiest) way of doing this, please? We and the builders are renovating an old farmhouse in Spain, and we have been told to apply linseed oil, but it's very hard to apply, thanks to gravity! Any advice most gratefully received!

Try appling your oil with a rag rather than a brush , not overloading it and rub it well in.
