The cord on the wall light in my mum's bedroom had broken, so this was taken down and sent for repair. A new switch was fitted which was different to the old switch. There are 2 wires coming out of the wall... red and black (it's an old house!) The wall light has now been rewired with blue and brown. Please can you tell me which wire would go into the new pull switch? Many thanks.

Brown or red is live which gets wired through the switch.

Blue or black is neutral.

This wall light isn't metallic is it? Does it have a green/yellow conductor along with the brown and blue conductors?

In any case:

Red - Brown (line conductor)
Black - Blue (neutral conductor)

Hello.

Brown to Red
Blue to Black.

Is the light fitting metal ?

Is there no earth conductor in the cable ?.

Ed

If the light fitting is metal you will need an earth connection (green or green+yellow).

Do you mean no earth wire in the wall, or no earth wire on the wall light?

In the wall there may be a bare copper wire folded up or even cut right back.

On the fitting there may be a screw terminal hidden somewhere.

Hi.
This fitting needs to be earthed.

With the circuit turned off have a look and see if the earth conductor has been cut short etc ?
Is it one of a pair ? as in if there is another light is that earthed ??

Regards
Ed

Can you see this symbol anywhere on the wall light?

If not, then it's not double insulated (Class II) and does require earthing. Not to earth the wall light in those circumstances can be extremely dangerous.

There is no earth on wall light fitting.....it is not one of a pair, there is just one in the middle of the wall. There is no symbol on wall light. There are only 2 visible wires coming out of the wall. Sounds like maybe we need an electrician to get this earthed? Many thanks to all!

Wendy, would it be possible for you to take a photograph of the connections to the wall light and post the photo here?

Photos of wall wiring and wall light.

Is the house 40+ years old?

Is there by any chance a round metal box sunk in the wall, with the wires disappearing into a conduit (pipe) attached to it?

House is about 80 years old. Nothing else on wall. Will try to post photos tomorrow, if I can sort out how to!!!
