Here is my DIY disaster. I hope someone can help.

Many years ago, because there were some broken bits in my black floor tiles, I made the mistake of trying to lift the tiles up in order to replace them. At first I thought things were going well. The concrete floor underneath had a black painted coating, but little bits of the concrete floor began coming up with the tile leaving a rough, lose, surface. What a disaster! I took up enough tiles to make the space symmetrical, and stopped.

The space is approximately 1 meter x 2 meters in the centre of my living room, which I have kept covered with a piece of floating lino and a rug.

I didn't realise at the time, but the tiles are most probably the asbestos type- 9 inch squared.

I urgently need to repair this space now. I'm resigned to not finding an exact match of tile in size or colour, but what I need help with is what can I use to make flat the concrete surface, so that new tiles will adhere properly and not crack underfoot?

Any advice will be gratefully received.

Thank you very much for reading.

Thank you very much for your reply and the information in the link.

I really would prefer to get in an experienced contractor but I don't know what I should be looking for. My bathroom ceiling which is roughly the same size as the 'space' also needs work - paint has peeled away and left areas of plaster exposed and will need to be sanded and repainted. I put a request in on a contractor website describing the work needed and measurements, and never got a reply - I assumed because the job was too small. I gave up.

Should I be able to find someone experienced to do both of these jobs? That's what I would like. Could you tell me what term I should be using to bring up what I need? Searching Flooring specialist is not helping.

I hope you will reply again. Thank you for your time and expertise.
