Purpose of a hole left in a chimney breast?

I'm buying a mid '60s property that's been extensively renovated and have noticed something that I need advice on.

It had a horrible ('60s) electric fire/surround on the (un-used) chimney breast in the living room.

The house has very good gas central heating so no electric fire is required and this old one is easily removed, but behind it is a hole about the size of a brick going into the old fireplace about 2 feet up from the floor.



Any idea what this is and why it may have been left open?

Is it required for ventilation of the chimney (which is obviously not in use) or can I cover it over?

yes its to stop damp
if you block it up you may get damp

...any suggestions for making it look more attractive without blocking it (besides covering it with a fire?)

you could hang a mirror about an inch away from the wall with the bottom edge covering the hole
or a hit and miss vent ?
