Push fit isolation

Hi all

I have a really annoying isolation valve I can’t seem to stop leaking after changing pipework, whether this is due to a knackered olive or myself doing something wrong.

I used the old valve to save cutting the pipe as it’s close to an elbow joint, however I’ve got to the point where I want to install a push fit isolation valve, however I don’t think I have enough pipe to fit into the push fit before it meets the elbow join

Does the push fit isolation valve need to be pushed all of the 3cm on to the pipe for it to work, or would I get away with 1.5cm if this was my limit due to the elbow join?

Many thanks

The pipe looks too close to the wall to allow a push fit isolation valve to fit.
You need around 20mm of good condition, clean pipe ,to connect any push fit to.

Turn the water off and split the bottom of the valve, pull the pipe right out and take a picture. It will be clear from where the olive is crimped if you've not pushed the pipe in far enough. Also, if you can pull the olive off with your hands you didnt tighten it enough.

If all looks good and it's still leaking you can wrap ptfe around the olive or use jointing compound.

Looks like it's the joint at the top of the valve that's leaking.

Isolate the mains, crack the top and bottom nuts, expose the olive top and bottom and visually check them. If the olive is badly misshapen (check shape with a new olive) and if the pipe is necked (pipe narrows under the olive) then it needs replaced, if not then a couple of wraps of gas PTFE tape around the olive and remake then nip up and that should sort it.

If you remake a compression joint re-using the olives, invariably it won't go back the way it came apart so it needs a bit of tape to help the olives seal back up again.

Thanks for your advice all. The leak is coming from the red line on the picture. I am struggling to expose the olive as there is hardened solder that stops the nut going up the pipe work.

Tried the compound but struggling to get it on the pipe so PTFE will be the way. I’ll try this

Many thanks guys

If you can't get compound around the olive you won't get PTFE tape around it. Get a strip of sandpaper and give it the bath towel rub treatment until you can slide the nut back

Thanks, will sandpaper remove the solder with a rub?

Yep, solder is pretty soft. Sandpaper will remove steel with a rub, just takes a hell of a lot more rubbing

Thanks for all your help guys, I removed the solder and manage to connect a push fit straight connector, I didn’t need the iso valve as the stop taps a few metres away
