Watching his speech on BBC News now (4.58pm start).

I can now see why leaders and kings of the past would be called "Mad" by the people, or historians later.

Mad Putin will be his title in years to come.

He just spent 10 minutes claiming Ukrainians were neo-Nazi's, holding foreigners hostage, using Arab fighters and how Russian soldiers were helping create safe corridors.

He did spend some time telling a story about a brave soldier who died killing many Ukranians - sounds like an important leader might have fallen.

All crazy though.

What are you qualifications in diagnosising Putin as "insane"

Putin is a coward, a bully, calculating and very, very evil but not "insane" IMO, fact

He may or may not be the definition of insane, but he is most definitely the most dangerous psychological sociopath the world currently has to deal with...

Personally I believe he would push the button, and thus we are entering imo the most deadly period of human existence since oppenheimer opened pandora's box!

Edit: Plenty of tories have got insanely rich through their direct/indirect dealings with vlad! (n)
 
Escalation is very likely IMO

Eventually Putin will have to deal with the supply of high tech (?) weapons entering the Ukraine ???

There was a so called expert on Newsnight last night who said Putin could not push the button alone but would need cooperation from his Generals who would be reluctant to assist knowing it would likely be the end of their families at home .
 
Nuttiest thing Lavrov is coming out with is the way America is a threat to them in Europe, and it's not for them (the Americans!) to say how Europe should look.

So it's up to Russia how Europe should look.

Russia - 9th most populous nation, 20th richest, which just happens to have the 2nd biggest guns.

That could be the case for any government with a nuclear capability.

Compare with the jihadi suicide bomber. If you have a belief, a firm confidence in that belief is right and just, then you do what you think necessary to do what your belief tells you.

If you are high up serving officer, it takes a lot to go against the orders of your commander. It's nothing like the boss telling you to do something at work you don't like. I't almost like instinct, like a reflex.
Russia has (or did have) quite a good system of public and military nuclear shelters for its citizens, and you can bet that the leader's families will be taken care of.

News was released today that the Economic ministers and department in the Kremlin were not even aware of any invasion plans. The way information is spread and what people know or believe is completely different in Russia and especially the Russian Government and the Kremlin.
