So, not necessarily insane, but possibly seriously or terminally ill.

In which case, he will be in a hurry to do whatever he has planned.

But what is his ultimate aim?

I'll believe that when we get it direct from the Kremlin - via one of H's sources.

Putin has been quite good at making himself dictator with control over the country

But strikingly inept at running a country.

he has convinced himself that Ukraine is "by rights" a part of Russia; that Ukraine has no right to govern itself, and that Ukrainians are Russias brothers. So what has he done? Triggered a brutal and futile war that will result in generations of hatred and a determination in Ukraine to do everything possible to prevent an Anschluss.

he is aware that Russia has a ticking demographic timebomb, with a predominantly old population, that has been shrinking for more than 20 years, and is short of bright young 20th Century technology. So by exposing his country to economic and political damge, he has caused educated young people to see their future outside Russia, and, when they can, to flee to new homes and jobs elsewhere.

“With this insane conflict, Putin is shooting himself in the foot. The biggest losses will come not from the conflict but from a deep economic crisis in Russia,” said Ilya Kashnitsky, assistant professor at the Interdisciplinary Centre on Population Dynamics in Denmark.

In a sign that Russia fears a brain drain as a result of the war, the government last month exempted young workers in the technology sector from compulsory military service, offering them advantageous mortgage rates, and freeing IT companies from income tax and inspections, as well as granting them access to cheap loans.

The Russian leadership had hoped the tech sector would accelerate economic development and, more recently, support the post-pandemic recovery.

But Russia has suffered a sharp brain drain in the tech sector since war broke out in late February. In the subsequent four weeks, between 50,000 and 70,000 workers in the sector left the country, an industry association chief said in March in a report to a Russian parliamentary commission."

"A further 70,000 to 100,000 more people will probably leave in April, said Sergey Plugotarenko, head of the Russian Association for Electronic Communications (RAEC), according to the state-run Interfax news agency.

“Clearly there’s emigration happening on a scale and pace that we’ve never seen before,” said independent demographer Alexey Raksha.

Jean-Christophe Dumont, who heads the OECD’s international migration division, said the volume of people leaving Russia previously had not been a source of concern for the government. “This situation now is certainly changing the game, and a number of countries are seizing the opportunity.”"

Like any covid-denier, Putin has under-reported Pandemic deaths. This has contributed to the shrinkage of population. Even the elderly gentlemen in the tank and armaments factories are dwindling, and youngsters are not replacing them.
