Question on UK domestic building wall constructions???

I'm an academic working in the University of Nottingham who specialises in building physics. I'm working on technologies that will reduce energy consumption in UK domestic houses.

My job is to find ways to make your houses warmer and cheaper to run

I'd like to building a database of UK wall constructions (materials and methodologies) on any domestic houses built in the UK over the last 200 years.

Does anyone know of a good source of information for this work?

How did you manage to get a Phd without knowing how to do some basic research in terms of building construction methods?

Have you tried the EHCS and JRF or any of the several heritage organisations?

The really worrying issue here is that in 5 years building regs may be based on his research.

Academia isn't what it used to be!

1) I work at the University of Nottingham in the Built Environment

2) Yes, I did learn a range of research skills when undertaking my PhD. One of them was to be humble enough to ask others for input as you never know what avenues you have missed.

By the way, I posted the request on the morning I went away for my Christmas Holiday. I had a lovely time with the family and have come back today feeling rather refreshed.

Work during this period was of course banned, but fortunately, you gentlemen took the time to post your comments.

Hi David, could you give us some detail on what the database would be used for. I've been giving it some (casual) thought since I saw your question and I'm struggling to think of a useful application.

Let me explain; Most of the common wall types are well known - they're in thousands of books everywhere. If I come across an unusual wall type in some situation I will know what it is because it will be right there in front of me. What's to look up? If I want to know the thermal details of that wall it's a fairly simple job to work that out on an as-and-when basis. On the other hand, if I've not yet come across the unusual wall type then I can't quite see why I would want to look one up.

On the other hand (that's my third hand) this could just be payback for every time my dissertation tutor gave me a hard time about not focussing on the subject.
