Quick numpty ceiling fan/light question.

Had to remove the downstairs ceiling fan/light fitting due to it shorting out and rusting from the leak in the shower above - but that's a horror story for another forum !

I have never fitted one and was a bit surprised to see it wired from the lighting circuit alone - I thought the motor might need the power circuit - is that normal and ok?

And thus are all "standard" fan/light combo's from B&Q similarly wired from the lighting circuit. If not what should I look for.

(Single wall switch control of the light & a pull chain for fan)

The one I had in my house before we removed it was only 80W motor, which is nothing compared to many light fittings these days and it was wired off the lighting circuit, I would be suprised if many used the ring main as its usually a bit of a pain to route the wire to it and then you usually end up with the problem of which neutral your going to use (either light or ring). If that ends with a borrowed neutral it doesn't meet the regs (AFAIK).

If you were wiring a device of the ring main because it took to much power to connect to a lighting circuit, then you borrowed a neutral from the lighting circuit, then depending on the loads involved you could end up with a fire, thats on top of the usual hazards of a borrowed neutral.

@OP, as the poster above points out, ceiling fans take very little power and are wired off the lighting circuit

The wall switch will control the entire appliance.

On the unit itself, there are 2 switches, one for the light, one for the fan (and one to make the fan go backwards ).

One can be used without the other, but with the wall switch off, neither can be used!

Have you checked the existing cables for damage? IR test?

they have instructions supplied with them. Follow these and it should be o.k.

depends on the manufacturer of the equipment as to how it is controlled
