And why are peanuts called nuts? They are not nuts?

And no this isn't a quiz question...
 
Lots of things are called nuts because they taste, er, nutty.
Usually the bit we eat is a seed.

A nut is technically "a fruit whose ovary wall becomes hard at maturity"

Peanuts are legumes, like peas in pods, but they grow underground.

There are less well defined definitions around how many come at once. A Brazil nut is a seed, not a nut, because a pod has several seeds.

There are some weird things out there.
