Hi, I need help. I am currently asking for a quote to fit a new boiler.

So far 3 quotes.

Plumber 1 says ALL radiators, bar 1, have to be fitted with individual thermostat controls by law.

Plumber 2 says, NO law - don't need any.

Plumber 3 says, ALL upstairs radiators must be fitted with individual thermostat controls by law.

Who is right?

Steven(now confused)d.i.y. uselss

None are completely right.
There is no law that says you need to add trv's to the bill when you change the boiler, but it is common sense to do so; it raises the comfort and lowers the bills. It is an area of great confusion and little importance as the majority of homes that I see either have the trv at max or simply, which negates the use of a trv.

why having trvs at max does it negate the use of them. some of mine are on max but they still turn off

CHeSS 2005 (HR5,HC5, HR6,HR5) asks for trvs on every room other than room with room stat.

This is for new installs , on fitting boiler to existing system bedrooms should be the minimum

Look HERE for latest CHeSS 2008 regulations.

You can download it from the link at the bottom of the page.

Plumber 3 is correct. Although common sense is to do as plumber 1 says.

Plumber 2 is probably old school and not quite up to date on his regulations.

Not according to CheSS he isn't.

Look into it in a bit more detail and i think you'll find I'm right :)

I think it is you that needs to look more carefully at Chess 2008.

You now have to adobt the basic practice as a minimum.

That means trv's on all rads except those in a room with a room thermostat.

This has been the case since chess 2006.

CHess is for new systems an you will struggle to find where it says it applies to upgrades (changeover) to existing systems re trvs

BG Doing their job properly should be fitting them to all rads (apart from rooms with stats in them)

Ive certainly not seen a full/partial install that weve done in the last 2 years nearly withought the trvs

may be wrong tho

A basic practice means that the TRV's have only got to be fitted to the bedroom radiators.

You do NOT have to have them on every radiator.

Perhaps not in your patch, I'm doing another one now!!!!!

When CHeSS 2006 came out, everything that was best practice in 2005 became basic practice.

Basic practice is now TRV's on all rads bar one. Best practice is the likes of more advanced time/temp controls and possibly the addition of weather comp.
