can anyone help i have a vailant boiler (12 months ) i live in a flat on one floor all the radiators are hot except one which does not get hot also the pipework to the radiator is cold i went in the loft and the pipes are hot but the pipes leading to the cold radiator are cold which is confusing as the pipe they lead off are hot

i have blead the radiator and air came out but still cold pipes and radiator
just as amatter of cause the electric did go off the other day for a few mins and it was working up to then i believe would this cause an air lock to one rad

you will still get water thru if one valve is shut and one open.
If its a trv, take the head off and check the centre pin moves freely.

i am no diyer but what is a trv and does it seem a serios or expensive problem i have had no problem since it was fitted

can anyone answer for me please in theory if i had air in the pipes or if the rad themostat had failed would this cause radiator to be cold and would the pipes leading to the loft be cold even if where the pipes tee off to this rad are hot in the loft

a TRV is a thermostatic radiator valve, the head will be bigger than the valve the other end and probably have 5 or 6 settng marks on a top you can rotate about one full turn. if you can get the top off (maybe a silver ring) you will see a chrome or brass pin in the centre, this needs to be free moving in and out.
As for the cold pipes, yes if its the only radiator on that leg.
if you cant free off the valve a new one would cost about £20-30 plus drain/fill fitting etc...

sorry to be a pain but when you say on the last leg the only way i can explain how it is laid out is as follows
in the loft where there are several pipes the pipes to this rsd lead off from another hot pipe and come straight to this rad on there own

sounds like it is on its own leg, do you have bigger pipes(22mm) with these pipes feeding the rad teeing off in 15mm.
If it is the only rad you will have no flow through the pipes back to the "header 22mm pipe" if the valve is stuck shut.
these valves often seize in the summer months then dont work when we need them to!!!

how about a nice paint drawing :D

shut the TRV's on all other radiators besides the cold one and turn the pump to full speed and turn on the heating, this should shift an airlock if there is one in the pipe.

If not do as people have said, take head off TRV, just below the big plastic head that you can twist there will be a silver ring, turn that anti-clockwise (just the silver ring not the plastic head) and once off check the pin moves up and down when you press it and is not stuck.

yes they are 22 ml with 15ml teeing off to the radiator this all sounds feasable to me (not a diyer) no nothing about plumbing but it was working the other day only thing happened since is that electric went off for 5 mins could this do anything if not do you think i need a new thermostat

if it was your thermostat you would have no heating at all.

have you got a pump in an airing cupboard?

no we do not have a pump anywhere except in boiler if the thermostat has gone why would i have no heating at all as all the rads have there own rad and rest of heating is working fine
