Hi my parents are struggling to get there living room radiator to heat up every other radiator in the house works fine, it did this last year and they ended up tapping the valve and it worked fine all last winter.

They've tried to tap the valve again with no luck, so my dad went and bought a new trv and has installed it but it's still not heating up any ideas?

He's got a greenstar cdi classic combi

He's turned off all the TRV and still not heating up, he also says valve pin isn't sticking and there's no air or water coming out of bleed.

Close EVERY other rad by its TRV ,see if the rad in question now heats up.

Lock shield not passing or pipe blocked.
Remove rad and check both valves flow water fully for a couple of minutes, keep system pressure at 1.5 bar using filling loop whilst running water through both valves ( not necessary to do both together,do one ,then the other)

He said there's no water coming out the pipes.

That's a dangerous way to do it. The valves should be left on the pipes ,if water does flow It will flood the place. Have them re fitted immediately to both pipes.

Has that radiator worked in the past ?
It's obviously blocked pipework ,and I suspect they are frozen.

Yes the radiator has worked previously it did the same last year but tapping the pipe made it work

As said ,probably ice plugs developed ,it's currently quite common. It's highly unlikely that both pipes would suddenly block up with system crud.

Is this something we can stop or is this just going to keep happening?

Insulating all radiator pipes would help ,but to be frank it's only this exceptionally low temperatures causing one off issues ,and the practicality of insulating every pipe is daunting. They run under flooring , buried in walls and floors etc.
Temperatures are forecast to improve over the next few days ,once water is flowing to that rad from both sides ,you can work on why it doesn't reach full temperature ,which is most likely a balancing issue.

Well what happened today the radiator started working again

Have had heating on all day but all the other rads switched off, opened the roof access nearboiler to let warm air in roof space, wonder if something was frozen?

Bit worrying if it's going to be cold considering the bungalows only a few years old

As I said yesterday

If the problem rad is now working/ heating fully ,the other rads can be turned on . If problem rad starts to then lose heat ,the system needs balancing.
