radiator/pipes bonding?

helleo ....this is my first post so please bear with me....i have looked through other post but cant find the answer.....i am having a boiler change over done and the plumber has told me that all the radiators and pipes to them will need to be connected together with earth cable (bonded)..he said theyre the regs.....is this true?????as it means that alot of the floorboards will need to be lifted....or is there an alternative way around this........

one more thing ....the boiler i am thinking of getting is a baxi potterton 30he......does anyone have any comments on this boiler?? the more people you speak to the more different opinions you get on which is a good reliable boiler......thanks in advance.......

I would so no they dont, if you cross bond at the boiler the rads will be part of the faraday cage anyway, if they have plastic pipe to them then I remember one of the lads ages ago showing us an interesting article stating that bonding rads may introduce an element of risk where there were none before.

Get him to call NIC or whoever moniters his part p to check this, he may just being over cautious, no bad thing

I personally would not **** on a baxi if it were on fire, but thats just little old me

does a rad have to be linked in if all the pipes have cross bonding at the boiler or if it has been piped to in plastic, surely that would insulate it anyway and avoid any problems with potentiality?

Your sparks needs an update.

Only rad pipes that need bonding are bathroom or sauna or swimming pool ones, and then only if the pipes to them are also in copper and even then you can do the heating pipes with the water pipes in an adjacent cupboard.

As for boiler bonding this has been in overkill ever since part P.

You can say what you like and do what you like but I'm sticking to my guns if the boiler is not in a special location it's a mute point whether any of it needs bonding but because in just one part of bs7671 there is a mention of central heating together with structural steal then the most I would do is bond the flow and return pipe and that doesn't even have to be at the boiler. If boiler is in a special location bond the lot, and you've covered all your bathroom bonding in most cases, and you can cage it to the cpc of the boiler power supply.

I am sick of all the over bonding going around, half the elctrcians in this town are still bonding kitchens. Then this always was sleepville, they'll not even have bought a brown book when the next colour arrives in 2008.

The boiler choice is satisfactory.

By the way what are you asking this sparks to do, and what is his estimate. If he wants to do any more than main equipotential bonding and checking the supply the boiler is to be fed from get suspicious. Ask on here in more detail and you'll then know whether to sack him off the job alltogether. He's either a tit or he's stringing the job out. Does he puff out his chest and point when he's dictating all this? Get rid of him.

thanks for the reply guys.....i think the plumber was just trying it on....was quoted a price for boiler change over....but was advised to have all the rads and paipework bonded together.....plumber told me this was an electrical regulation and must also be done at same time as boiler changeover......

BTW what boiler do the proffesionals prefer.....first looked at ravenheat...then told that was crap....then biasi....same for that one .....last one reccommended baxi potterson or worcester.....what are you suggestions....thanks

Sound slike your plumber has been got at by the corgi electrical side, what a bunch of nutcases.

If boiler in airing cupboard check that bathroom bonding is done and if not do it at the boiler.

Potty performa 30he is OK.

Depends on your price bracket, a band a boiler would be better for you, but having said that most of my sales are of band b boilers.

Funny thing, you know that's the boiler they stole from Alpha by buying the Italian company who makes it. First laugh was, at first they couldn't import it because Alpha had sole rights to UK market, any how a financial deal was done.

Next laugh, remember the squeeling diverter valve seals? Alpha used to change all of those as they imported them, must have forgotten to inform Baxi!

Well it's OK I haven't had any major problems with them.

My chosen band b boiler of that output is the sabre 29he or 35he. 29 quite adequate.
