Hi,

I'm planning some decking in the garden and was after some advice.

Basically my main worry is that we are on a new build estate and the ground is like thick with clay and holds water. I'm worried about the new decking being stuck in the water and causing wrot etc.
I'm wondering the best way to raise the decking by only a couple of inches (maximum) really to just keep it off the floor - really didn't want to do these from timber also as this would wrot.
Also, we are looking to put a shed on one area of the decking.

Any advice appreciated.

Thank you,

Ben

I built mine on posts in postcrete, so it wasn't touching the ground.

1. Dig 4 (or more) holes for the corners of the deck - about 30cm deep.
2. Use a sturdy post and bag of postcrete in each one.
3. Next day cut to correct height and attach your frame & decking.

Ours was still standing 9 years later when we moved out... :)

When I built my deck I dug holes 30cm wide and ~ 60 - 70cm deep, bought these up ~10cm with hardcore pounded into the bottom until it wouldnt sink anymore followed by a medium density block. Then concreted 10cm posts in the holes and let dry. I actually let it dry for ages before I moved on with the job.

Looking back on it I would have used concrete posts - you can get ones to use as deck support posts with bolt holes in them.

I also 'belled' the holes out so they were wider at the bottom.
