Hi, First post on here. i would like to raise the height of my joists to build a chipboard loft floor over the insulation which is roughly 8" in depth. The current joists are 4"x2". On top of these joists running at 90 deg are 2 x 8"x2" timbers (binders) ?? so my question is do i use 8"x2" joists at 90 deg on top of the joists thus being able to board out more of the loft as the floor will be the same level as the binders, but will this add too much additional weight to the existing ceiling.
or use smaller 4"x2" timbers in the same way which will be less weight but will leave the binders 4" above new floor !
or Loft stilts (which i am really not sure about)
I would hope to store quite a bit in the loft ie general boxes also clothes shoes etc and boxes of paperwork. Hopefully this is all clear, but if you think you may be able to provide advice and would like more info please let me know !
Any help greatly appreciated.
