Range Cooker Doors Colour Change

I have a Rangemaster cooker and I want to change the colour of the Doors from Cream to either Satin or Gloss black. The doors are presently enamel paint and the manufacturers have stopped suppling replacement door outers. The only option I have therefore is to repaint the doors or buy a new range cooker with the attendant expense.
Has any one any advice on how I can change the colour of the doors and what product would be suitable.

I thought I may have determined a solution using a Wood burner spray paint but this paint requires high temperature curing and I have not the facility to cure the paint and I have no idea if the spray paint would adhere to the existing enamel surface.

Any ideas anyone?

I would have thought that the doors would be stove enamelled, and therefore should be recoloured by a specialist who would remove the old enamel. Stove enamelling is effectively coloured glass particles which are sprayed onto the surface and then baked on....melting the glass in the process.
Don't go down the stove paint or high temperature coatings route - you'd be disappointed!

I am presently trying to locate a local Stove Enamelling company, but the one I have contacted do not deal with small private jobs. I will keep searching.

Hi Burnerman,
In my searches for a local Enameler I have located a guy who would strip the oven outer doors and re-coat with a powder coating which is then cured at 150'C for 90 minutes. Have you any advice on this type of application, as it is not strictly Enamelling.

I've had quite a lot to do with powder coating in the past, but its always been of the plastic type, where it is sprayed on to a negatively charged workpiece and then cured at temperature.
Obviously it depends on what process the guy is using - but I would think there would be examples of his work to see? As long as the top coat doesn't soften at working temperature (60 deg maybe?) then it should be fine. The chances are it wouldn't be as hard wearing as enamel but I can't say that with any certainty.

I have located a guy who reckons he has done similar doors in the past with powder surface finishing, but other companies say that they would not attempt it on a pre enamelled surface, so I am in a bit of a dilemma as to whether it will work or not.
I may be forced into replacing the cooker just to get a colour match.
Mrs Hysteresis has to make some decisions.

Just for closure -
Well it seemed like a 'good idea at the Time', but my suggested solution to my problem was thwart with uncertainties, so in the end I have decided to replace the cooker as I am sure the resurfacing solution would in the end be a disaster and thought I had best just accept the forced expenditure.

You can change the whole doors or possibly just the outer door skins.

If you havent changed your range, post the serial no, take the drawer out on the left hand vertical chassis member theres a data badge

thanks Gasbanni, but i have been down that route and the door outers are no longer manufactured by Leisure Rangemaster as the designs have changed. However I learned that a later designed outer could be adapted to fit, so I thought that is the way to go, but guess what? They would not be in stock unti after Christmas. I eventually sourced a local company who would recolour the door outer using Powder process and I gave that a go and it worked very well and they did the job in two days.

Make sure the doors are sealing correctly all round, check with a strip of newspaper.

If they aren't the escaping heat might damage the refinished doors !

Thanks gasbanni, I didn't think of that, I rather asumed the door seal was OK as that is part of the inner door, but the oven is now on I will check it roght away.

Open the doors and hold the open top corner if you can lift the door slightly and jiggle it and it moves you might need hinge bushes (nylon top and bottom ) two per door.

To adjust the doors loosen the nut and the catch can be moved in and out then retighten the nut when its correct.

The Catch and keep tend to wear, if they door does'nt seem to close properly that the problem.

Drop me a message if you need those parts, nylon bushes not available as seperate items and come with new hinges, but Ive got a few spare.

I am in the same boat you were in a few years ago, with wanting to change the colour of my Rangemaster.

Please could you tell me if your re-paint was successful long term?

Also, please could you advise what sort of company you had do the work, was it an enamelling company? I don’t know where to start with my Google search!

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Annanel,
As you can see from the dates on my posting I had my Ringmaster doors recoloured about 8 years ago. I used a local company who specialises in 'Powder Coating'. I think this process is not truly enamelling but it is suitable for Cooker Doors. The treatment is heat cured so is not the same as spray painting. It was necessary for me to remove the doors and the Glass windows and all of the door seals and hinges, Sounds a lot of work but it isn't, takes about 10 minutes. The Powder Coating company made a fantastic job of the doors and after I refitted the doors to the Cooker it looked brand new. That was 8 years ago. Last year I replaced my cooker and the doors were still as new. So in answer to your question, my re-enamelling/ Powder coating was 100% successful.
To locate the Powder coating company I simply Googled for local Powder Coating companies and came up with a company.
I live in Cleveland and could give you the name of the company, but I know the company was sold on after I used them as such they may not still deal with the public. When I last talked to them they did. but that was a few years ago.
There are lots of Powder coating companies around. The doors cost me £70 to re-colour which was fantastic as it essentially gave me a new cooker that would have cost me around £1200.
