Some weeks ago whilst my partner was doing the ironing the main RCD main switch tripped out. It's a memera 2000 consumer unit with one main switch RCD 80a 30ma (not split load). This happened a couple more times over the next few weeks, so I told her to chuck the iron away and we bought a new one. However it then tripped once when she was using the hoover, we reset it and there wasn't a problem. Yesterday it tripped again, no appliances were being used accept for the fridge/freezer and a computer. When we reset the RCD, our monitor no longer worked. Then this morning whilst my missus was in the bathroom, all the lights went out upstairs. When i checked the consumer unit the main switch had not tripped, but the 6amp mcb for the upstairs lighting had. I was going to put the mcb back on but then I could smell burning coming from the bathroom, so I have kept it turned off. I know I am going to have to call in an electrician, but I am a tenant, it's not my house. My landlord is quite slow at getting things done, but when it's electricity I don't want to take any chances. So I might suggest getting someone in my self, but I like to be armed with a bit of information when the electrician comes, because I don't want some rogue tradesman trying to pull the wool over my eyes. What would be an electricians first steps after I have explained to him the chain of events. What should I do in the mean time? Should I switch all the power off?

It may be that the iron and the RCD trippping are not related. The MCB tripping on the lighting circuit may be a separate thing caused buy a lamp blowing, or as a result of that burning smell.

You MUST get the landlord to own the responsibility for this. Tell him there's a buring smell when the electricity is turned on. Also put this in writing, so he has been told formally. He wont want to lose the property to the fire.

It turns out that the burning smell was the fan in the bathroom. The lights are ok, but the fan has gone for a burton.

So, if you disconnect the fan (put the bare wire ends into a bit of choc block).

You should then be able to turn on the MCB to restore your lights.

Then keep an eye on the RCD. It may have been the fan that was tripping it.
